Guardianship of
a disabled person is one of the most important relationships
that can exist between two people. Traditionally,
this has been a job taken on by family members. However, during
the last twenty years,
there have been fewer family members ready, willing and/or able
to assume the responsibilities of guardianship.
The only alternative to family members is
the assignment of a public
guardian.
After 17 years as the founder and director of the public guardianship program,
Granite State Guardianship Services, I have started a private guardianship
practice. This practice is based on the principle that good guardianship relies
on having knowledge of the individual, their life and beliefs; and that
the focus is on the individual. The caseload will be limited; each ward
and treatment team will be seen regularly to assure that the guardian is
involved in the affairs of the ward.
As a founding
member of the National
Guardianship Association, I have worked with colleagues
throughout the country to assure that decisions being made
for others are what the individual expressed prior to incapacity,
are least restrictive, and in the best interest of the individual.
